🎤 Session: Energy Transition: At What Cost?

📊In this session, David will take a data-driven approach to one of the most pressing questions facing the global energy landscape: not whether the transition will occur—but how efficiently, equitably, and sustainably it can be executed.

📌The data tells a more nuanced story than headlines suggest. Despite rapid growth, renewables still account for only ~10% of total U.S. energy production and ~23% of electricity generation—highlighting the continued structural reliance on traditional fuels. At the same time, solar paired with storage is approaching cost parity with fossil fuels, while policy mechanisms such as the Inflation Reduction Act temporarily reduced renewable costs by approximately 30%, with many of these incentives now beginning to phase out.

However, the transition cannot be evaluated on cost alone. A fundamental tension is emerging between financial viability, system reliability (“firmness”), and carbon impact:

• Natural gas remains cost-competitive but carries the highest emissions burden
• Wind technologies are demonstrating strong market performance and investor confidence
• Hydrogen, while promising, continues to face significant economic and infrastructure constraints

🔗Beyond technology, the energy transition is increasingly a supply chain and economic strategy challenge. An “all-of-the-above” domestic supply chain approach could unlock approximately 600,000 jobs, but only if organizations address global sourcing dependencies and build competitive advantage in strategically critical technologies.
