Battery Chemistries

Most phones, laptops desktops and tablet computers, and anything else that is handheld or needs to be recharged, including power tools and e-bikes, rely on lithium-ion batteries. And as sales of these devices has skyrocketed, so has the demand for batteries.

While the consumer electronic device revolution began with phones, electric vehicles (EVs) will drive a massive and sustained increase in the demand for lithium-ion batteries. In 2016 there were two million EVs in world, mostly in Asia. By 2025 EVs will cost same as gasoline-powered cars, thanks to massive economies of global production. By 2050 nearly half of all auto sales will be electric.

By necessity, sales of batteries and the battery supply chain, including electronic components and active materials, particularly anodes, cathodes, and electrolytes, will follow. Compound growth rates of nearly 10% are standard, and some segments are seeing up to 25% per year growth.

Superior performance and ultra-low cost will increasingly be essential to playing a role in this supply chain. End users and large global suppliers are building gigafactories that are driving costs lower than ever.

BSI works with end-users as well as battery manufacturers and component and material suppliers to test the performance and value of alternative battery choices. We engineer the best type of battery solution to meet your long-term requirements, and conduct technico-commercial studies to identify the importance of performance attributes, evaluate the impact of new and emerging technologies on performance and sales, and develop strategies for market entry, penetration, and pricing.
